Difference between ECR and ECNR passport in India

Difference between ECR and ECNR passport in India

Previously in an Indian passport  a rubber stamp used stamper as to whether the holder is entitled to ECNR  ( Emigration Check Not Required) status or ECR status ECR means Emigration Check Required status.

Many years ago only certain Indian passport holders were entitled to ECNR status  for example graduates or above, income tax payers for three years amongst other conditions then enumerated and others got the ECR status.

Now the rules have been simplified for the grant of the said status. Now a person who has completed his matric is entitled to non ECR status in other words ECNR status. This is my opinion is a little confusing question and in the online application form which certain persons get confused with. It means ECNR but the wording confuses one.

Now only the ECR stamp is stamped on the passport if the said check is requires , otherwise the said is missing on the passport.

Non ECR holders of Indian passport can go to Countries for work etc. without getting a clearance from The Emigration Authorities Of India before leaving India. Now a days with the passage of time 10th. Class pass individual is accepted as a educated person who knows the right and the wrong and is expected to have the knowledge that he is not being duped and that he is aware of what lies ahead where he intends to go.

But, if they are not so educated as said above, they require ECR, means they need special safe guards like proper and valid work permit/work visa/job agreement, etc., between their employer in foreign country where they want to go and then , which is to be ensured by at the office of The Protectorate of Emigrants(POE) in India in order to ensure that they are not exploited by their employers in certain countries when they are on their job when abroad.

The intention of the ECR stamp is mainly to check and avoid illegal trafficking and exploitation of the Indian Nationals who are not so well aware of their prospects and go abroad to some countries expecting a bright future but land up in doom there.
